The execution of projects involves both portfolio management and project management. Portfolio management focuses on the culmination of all projects across the organization including the planning of delivery of projects. In contrast, project management is the delivery of each individual project.
The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta has recognized the benefits of implementing portfolio and project management tightly into the CRNA’s daily operations. A structured approach to work delivers real value against business opportunity, brings leadership and direction to projects, establishes plans for executing against strategic goals and objectives, assures proper expectations are set around what can be delivered, by when, and for how much, ensures the quality of whatever is being delivered is consistent, manages and mitigate risks, empowers people do the right things, at the right time, and provides learnings from the successes and failures of the past.
Standard templates, frameworks, and generally accepted project management methodologies are utilized to increase the timeliness of the delivery of work while reducing the risks associated with the lack of structure. Not only does a structured approach to work delivery enable every part of the business to run more smoothly, it also allows project team members to focus on the work that matters, free from the distractions caused by tasks going off track or budgets spinning out of control.
Portfolio and project management is tightly integrated into the CRNA’s corporate strategy. The Three-Year Strategic Plan identifies work the CRNA wishes to accomplish over that period of time while the One Year Annual Plan is the work delivered within the fiscal year.
